SWEET WATER HIGH STUDENT SELECTED FOR NATIONAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

ARLINGTON, AL (February 17, 2012) – Pine Belt Telephone recently nominated 5 local high school students for participation in the Foundation for Rural Education and Development (FRED) 2012 Leadership Through Learning Program.  Emily Stokley was one of 11 students selected from rural areas across the nation to participate in an all-expense paid week in our nation’s capital to learn about government, civic affairs and telecommunications regulation. During their week in Washington, D.C., students are immersed in the political process and experience the history of America.

Emily is a Sweet Water High School senior, the daughter of Tina and Stan Stokley of Sweet Water, and granddaughter of Leslie and Melanie Stokley of Millry, Aksel Asmussen of Hayelsville,NC and Hanne Gear of Dawsonville,GA.  “I am most excited about experiencing Washington, D.C.” said Miss Stokley.  “I want to see everything. I am looking forward to the flight, the travel, the sightseeing and the conferences. I greatly appreciate Pine Belt Telephone giving me the opportunity to participate” Emily added.

Stan Stokley commented: “This is an exciting and unique opportunity for Emily.  I want to thank John Nettles, Pine Belt Telephone and the Foundation for Rural Education and Development for making this program available to the students in our area.”  Tina Stokley said: “I think that the possibility of meeting leaders in Washington will be a great experience for Emily and one that she will remember for years.”

“Everyone at Pine Belt is very proud of Emily and each of the other 4 students that Pine Belt Telephone nominated for this program,” said John Nettles, President of Pine Belt Telephone.  “These 5 students went through a detailed application process and their applications were reviewed by FRED’s selection committee in Washington. Our congratulations go out to Emily and to each of the students who put the time and effort into their application for the program.  This is Pine Belt’s first year to nominate students and we hope to see continued interest from our local students for years to come” added Nettles.
